1.) Fierman, Floyd S. Guts and Ruts: The Jewish Pioneer on the Trail in the American Southwest. New York: KTAV Publishing House, Inc., 1985.

2.) Fierman, Floyd S. Roots and Boots: From Crypto-Jew in New Spain to Community Leader in the American Southwest. Hoboken: KTAV Publishing House, 1987.

Dr. Fierman lived in El Paso where he was rabbi of Temple Mount Sinai and director of the El Paso Jewish Historical Society. After his retirement, he occupied himself "investigating and recording the saga of the Jew in the Spanish Borderlands." Both volumes contain brief biographies of leading families, genealogies and indexes.

3.) Libo, Kenneth and Howe, Irving. We Lived There Too: In Their Own Words & Pictures-Pioneer Jews and the Westward Movement of America, 1630-1930. New York: St. Martin's/Marek, 1984.

A thoroughly enjoyable documentary history of the Jewish westward migration in the United States.

4.) Marks, M. L. Jews Among the Indians: Tales of Adventure and Conflict In The Old West. Chicago: Benison Books, 1992.

Doesn't deliver quite as much as it promises, but still provides an interesting perspective and offers some new material.

5.) Meketa, Jacqueline Dorgan. Louis Felsenthal: Citizen-Soldier of Territorial New Mexico. Albuquerque: University of New Mexico Press, 1982.

Beautifully written and thoughtfully researched. Important both for New Mexico Jewish and Civil War history.

6.) Nahm, Milton C. Las Vegas and Uncle Joe: The New Mexico I Remember. Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 1964.

Colorful reminiscence of a colorful community.

7.) Rochlin, Harriet and Fred. Pioneer Jews: A New Life in the Far West. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1984.

A good overview history of the Jewish experience in the far West, from the arrival in the 1500s of Crypto-Jews and Conversos until 1912, when Arizona and New Mexico became states, and "nuestro gente could live in freedom under a flag unblemished by the stain of the Spanish Inquisition." Well illustrated, extensive bibliography.
